Where Are Premium Cigars Made?
While many countries around the world make cigars, the best tend to come from just four nations: Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Honduras, and Nicaragua. These countries boast the highest annual production of premium cigars, with the Dominican Republic and Cuba in the lead and Nicaragua and Honduras close behind.
Premium Cigars from Cuba
Perhaps thanks to their notoriety, the average person will generally guess that the best cigars come from Cuba, even if that person has no statistical knowledge of cigars. Cuba is well-known for its high-quality, premium cigars, and it’s been that way for years.
Cuba’s government controls the production of all of the country’s cigars, and strict quality control standards are in place. To ensure their products are of the highest quality, many of Cuba’s cigar companies produce only hand rolled cigars, as opposed to ones that are produced and processed by machine. The professionals who handle these cigars are called “torcedores,” and they’re held in high social regard for their skills and mastery of the cigar business.
Cigars comprise one of Cuba’s biggest exports, and although there are hundreds of premium cigar brands that operate in Cuba, some of the better-known ones include Ramone Allones, Montecristo, Cohiba, Bolivar, Hoyo de Monterrey, H. Uppman, La Gloria Cubana, Romeo y Julieta, and Flor de Cano.
Premium Cigars from the Dominican Republic
Along with Cuba’s superior products, some of the world’s most highly favored cigars hail from the Dominican Republic. Dominican cigars are known for their particularly strong and robust flavor that comes from the country’s homegrown tobacco.
The Dominican Republic hasn’t always been a cigar-producing country. It wasn’t until 1962, when tobacco farmers in Cuba were no longer able to sell products to the U.S. because of the embargo, that many of these experts moved to the D.R. to carry on their livelihood. There they planted Cuban tobacco seeds in the rich domestic soil, which eventually led the Dominican Republic to become the major cigar producer it is today.
Premium cigar brands from the Dominican Republic include Arturo Fuente, AVO, Pinar del Rio, La Aurora, Davidoff, and Macanudo.
Premium Cigars from Honduras and Nicaragua
Cigars from Honduras and Nicaragua are also held in high regard. They tend to have a robust flavor, though they are considered mild in comparison to cigars from many other countries.
While the Hondurans and Nicaraguans have not always been the most popular cigar producers, they have been on the rise over the past few years. According to Cigar Aficionado, Nicaraguan cigars have seen a huge surge in popularity in the past decade; in 2012 the country exported twice the amount of product it had just six years before, putting out 78.7 million units total. That same year Honduras also saw a jump in product interest, shipping out more than 70 million units.
Some top cigar brands hailing from Honduras include Alec Bradley, Baccarat, CAO, Gurkha, Illusione, and J. Fuego. Premium cigars from Nicaragua include 601, Acid, Ashton Heritage, Padron, Perdomo, and Oliva.
